Ballerina, a spinoff of the John Wick franchise starring Ana de Armas and (apparently) Keanu Reeves, is slated to officially begun production in Prague from November 7. Czech Anglo Productions, which handled the recent shoot of The Crow in the Czech Republic, is coordinating local production of Ballerina.
Among other locations, Ballerina is set to shoot in Prague’s city center by the Hotel Opera at Těšnov and at the Masarykovo nádraží train station in the coming week.
In addition to Prague, Ballerina will also shoot in other cities around the Czech capital. More filming locations will be known in the coming weeks; the action movie will shoot in the Czech Republic across the next three months, through February 5.
Reeves’ involvement in the movie has not been previously confirmed, but the actor has been spotted around Prague and photographed with local fans. Given the connection to the John Wick franchise, it’s safe to presume he’s in town for production on Ballerina, if only for a small role or cameo.
Few details about the plot of Ballerina have been made public to date. Ana de Armas will presumably star as the ballerina briefly played by New York City Ballet dancer Unity Phelan in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) is directing Ballerina from a script by Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead). Earlier this year, de Armas revealed that Promising Young Woman writer/director Emerald Fennell had been brought in to touch up the script.
“It was really important for me to hire a female writer, because to that point when I got involved in the project, it was only the director, Len Wiseman, and another guy,” de Armas told Elle this summer.
“And I was like, ‘That’s not going to work.’ So I interviewed, like, five or six female writers. We hired Emerald Fennell, which I was so proud of.”
Ballerina isn’t the only upcoming project for the John Wick universe.
John Wick: Chapter 4 recently wrapped production at locations including Berlin and Studio Babelsberg in Germany ahead of a planned release next spring, and Chapter 5 is slated to begin production imminently.
The Continental, a TV series spinoff set at the chain of hotels that feature heavily in the John Wick universe, was filmed in Hungary earlier this year. Star Mel Gibson even took a tour of Prague after filming wrapped in Budapest.
Ballerina star Ana de Armas is no stranger to Prague. Last summer, she shot for the Netflix blockbuster The Gray Man in the Czech capital, and even got into pilates at a local studio.
