This weekend in Prague: An animated Mucha exhibit opens at the castle

Czech artist Věra Nováková worked in seclusion for decades and was unable to show her work in the communist era. The exhibition Via vitae, at DOX until Oct. 16, shows some of her work as well as pieces by artists who inspired her.

Throughout the summer until the end of October, the garden behind the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Černínský palác), at Loretánské náměstí is open to the public on weekends from 10 am to 5 pm. The garden, with Baroque details, was made into transformed into an English-style park in the 19th century.

This is the last weekend for Kavárna potmě, which serves coffee in complete darkness. The admission fee goes to support a charity that helps the visually impaired. The cafe can be found on náměstí Míru from 9 am to 8 pm until July 3.

A mix of bubbly wine and popular music can be found at Prosecco Fest, held at Střelecký ostrov on July 2. You can hear cover bands interpret the music of ABBA, the Beatles, Karel Gott, Queen, Smokie, and more. Tickets required.

The cultural festival Ratha – Yatra on July 3 at náměstí Republiky. The Festival of Chariots starts with a parade at noon and has cultural presentations starting at 3 pm. There will be a tent with a free vegetarian menu for all visitors, and a stand offering spices, gift items, clothing, and home accessories from India.

For people not going to the big film festival in Karlovy Vary, there is a screening of the Oscar-winning 1967 crime film Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. It’s at Letní kino u Keplera on July 1 at 9:15 pm.

With the start of summer vacations, most of the big music events for the weekend have moved out of Prague. The electronic dance music festival Beats For Love, headlined by  Armin van Buuren, is in Ostrava on July 1–4.

Drag queen Miss Petty kicks off the summer season at Palác Akropolis on July 2 with a christening party for her new EP. Unlike many drag queens who rely on lip-synch, Miss Petty creates her own music and is known for her distinctive music videos.

Prague Proms continues with Mnozil Brass at Smetana Hall in Obecní dům on July 3. The Austrian septet has a new show called “Phoenix” that they say will treat the serious side of life with the appropriate degree of flippancy. 

The tribute show Celebration of Queen features Marc Martel, who has been in several Queen cover bands and recorded some vocals for the hit film “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The show is at Forum Karlín on July 3. Tickets for previously scheduled shows remain valid.

The annual Salsa and Bachata open-air party at náměstí Václava Havla on July 1 has a long list of DJs playing from 4 pm to 10 pm to help you get your groove on. The event is brought to you by the Czech National Salsa Congress in cooperation with the New Stage of the Czech National Theatre.

Try your hand at art at Urban Sketching: Žižkov freight railway station. Bring your own art materials and meet up at 5:30 pm on July 1 at the Nákladové nádraží Žižkov tram stop. Later, some of the people will go to nearby Parukářka park to discuss their efforts.

It’s your last chance to catch Arena festival, at Smíchovská náplavka until July 2. The festival, overseen by the Forman Brothers, presents local and international theater, new circus, music, and contemporary performing art. 

Start the weekend with laughter. Velvet Friday: Stand-Up Show, in English with live music and an after-party, is at Pracovna on July 1. Lucie Macháčková headlines the show.

The Invisible Exhibition (Neviditelná výstava) has prepared a special Fairytale Tour where children in the dark complete fairytale tasks and experience magical adventures, to help them overcome the fear of darkness. During the tour, they will meet Cinderella, Goldilocks, and various animals. The event, geared toward Czech speakers, is on July 3 at 10 am at the New Town Hall.
