This weekend in Prague: Craft beer at Prague Castle and a weekend of open gardens

The exhibition Move: Intimacy as Resistance runs at Veletržní palác from June 10 to Oct. 9. The show is an outgrowth of one that began in Paris’s Centre Pompidou and is in Prague for the first time. Female artists explore their spaces and own bodies via video and photography. This edition also takes into account the effects of lockdown and seclusion due to the pandemic.

Small breweries have been hard hit, and need all the help they can get. A Festival of Microbreweries at Prague Castle takes place June 10 and 11 in the Royal Garden (Belvedere). Over 50 breweries from the Czech Republic and neighboring countries are expected to participate. The amount of visitors is limited, but tickets will be available at the gate each day.

Czechia’s biggest Cider Festival, now in its fifth edition, can be found at the Prague Market on June 11 and 12. A lineup of international food vendors will be on hand as well. Admission includes a festival glass for tasting.

The two-day Wine and Fish Festival brings together over 20 domestic wineries paired with purveyors of all kinds of fish and seafood. You can find them, complemented by street performers, at Smíchovská náplavka on June 10 and 11.

Spend your Sunday sampling treats from around the world at the Festival of International Cuisine, held on June 12 at Karlínské náměstí. Entertainment will be provided by Lovesong Orchestra and DJs. Workshops for children and body decorating with henna are also available.  

Celebrate all things strawberry at Jahodobraní on Tylovo náměstí on June 10. You can expect to find jams, juices, pies, cakes, strudels, pancakes, and similar treats. Once you buy some berries, you can check out our recent strawberry recipe guide.  

Over 100 creators and designers will be at MINT Market at Prague Market on June 11. Fashions, jewelry, organic cosmetics, candles, stationery, and food are among the offerings.

The Weekend of Open Gardens lets people visit 14 spots in Prague plus many more across the country. Be aware, though, that while some venues are open for free, others such as the gardens under Prague Castle and Vyšehrad charge admission and have special guided tours (in Czech).

The Bonsai and Japanese Culture Festival will showcase some miniature trees that are over a century old in the Botanical Garden in Troja from June 10 to 19. A bonsai tree is a work of art that is never finished, as it is always changing. Special events take place throughout the weekend and the following week, and some trees are for sale.

The United Islands of Europe festival celebrates freedom, with 40 bands from across Europe on five stages on June 10 and 11. The main stage is on Střelecký ostrov, and the other events spill out between Kampa and Smíchov. Entry is free.

The Prague Rocks 2 minifestival with My Chemical Romance plus Eclipse and Manon Meurt has been moved to O2 Arena on June 11. Tickets for standing remain valid but instead will be for seats in the upper level. People with seats should have received new tickets already.

Hear the legendary music of Queen in a touring show called Queen Symphonic. A five-piece cover band and an orchestra will play the greatest hits including “Bohemian Rhapsody” on June 11 at Sportovní hala Fortuna (formerly Tipsport Arena) in Holešovice.

Former Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and his new band Saucer Full of Secrets come to Forum Karlín on June 12. The band plays early Pink Floyd tracks, and a highlight of the current tour is a performance of the 20-minute long song “Echoes.”

California band The Offspring brings their alternative punk sounds to the new open-air space Power Station Holešovice on June 12. The current lineup includes founding member Dexter Holland and long-time lead guitarist Noodles. One of the touring musicians is Jonah Nimoy, grandson of Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy.

Australian composer Brett Dean’s new opera version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet gives a different viewpoint on the well-known material. Bio Oko on June 12 presents a recently recorded stage performance from New York as part of the Metropolitan Opera series.
